None of the Cowboys make the second day of action at the Reno Tournament of Champions

LON AUSTIN - Camron Vail tweaks his opponent during the Adrian Irwin Invitation over the weekend. The Cowboys' junior varsity squad represented the program at the event held at Caldera High School in Bend, and they took ninth in the 15-team tourney. The varsity squad went south to take part in the Reno Tournament of Champions. There, they found the going rough as none of the squad's wrestlers made it to the second day of competition. As a team, Crook County took 34th out of 109 teams.

The Crook County High School wrestling team still has some work to do if they want to challenge for a state championship. The team saw just how far they still have to go this weekend as they failed to put anyone into Saturday's second day of the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Poway, California, was the runaway winner of the tournament, amassing 288 points, to 194.5 for second-place Temecula Valley. Crescent Valley was the top finishing Oregon school at the tournament, placing fifth. Crescent Valley was tied for 15th at the end of day one, while Crook County was just behind in 26th place, and Roseburg was in 28th.

However, with no athletes surviving the first day of the tournament, the Cowboys did not score again, finishing 34th with just 65 points in the 109-team event. Meanwhile, Crescent Valley finished with 170.5, while Roseburg moved up to 17th with 98 points and Sprague took 21st with 85.5 points.

"Reno was a great opportunity and learning experience and the guys competed well," said Crook County head coach Jake Gonzales. "We just need to keep learning and improving each day."

For the Cowboys Alberto Flores, 106, Landon Lavey, 113, Mitch Warren, 120, Wyatt Wood, 138, Gavin Sandoval, 145, Brayden Duke, 182, and Jubal Brumble, 220, all finished with 2-2 records. Cash Wells, 132, Gage Hanson, 170, Ray Solis, 195, and Maurico Ambriz, 285, all finished with 1-2 records.

As has happened each of the previous two weeks, the Crook County JV squad also competed in a varsity tournament, traveling to Caldera High School in Bend to compete in the 15-team Adrian Irwin Invitational.

That tournament was won by Mountain View with 342 points. La Pine finished second with 260 points, while Burns and Madras tied for third with 153 points. The Cowboys came away with ninth place with 120 points.

Mason Lacy was the lone Cowboy champion, taking first place in the 113-pound weight class.

Other Cowboy placers included Duke Wentzel, third at 106 pounds, Camron Vail, third at 120 pounds, and Justin England, sixth at 126 pounds.

"The guys at Adrian Irwin competed well too," Gonzales said.

Crook County's lone girl wrestler, McKenna Duran, finished third at 140 pounds in the girls tournament.

The Cowboys do not compete again until Wednesday, Jan. 5, when they host Redmond in an Intermountain Conference dual meet. JV wrestling is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at approximately 7 p.m.
