The Cowboys went 1-2 in a strange week where they played in two separate holiday events in Sisters and Bend.

A tough non-conference schedule has given the Cowboys a good deal of trouble so far.

The Crook County boys basketball team went 1-2 during a strange week in which the Cowboys played in both the Summit Holiday Classic at Summit High School and the Sisters Holiday Shootout at Sisters High School. The Cowboys' 63-47 win over out-of-state visitors Hockinson (Washington) in Bend was bookended by losses to 4A Banks and 6A Mountain View.

The week started out in an unexpected way, when the Cowboys' original matchup against David Douglas being canceled after the Scots accepted an invitation to be a replacement team in the Les Schwab Invitational. Crook County managed to find another game a bit further down the road, as a few teams dropped out of the boys bracket in the Sisters Holiday Shootout.

Crook County took on Banks (6-3, 0-0 Cowapa) on Tuesday, Dec. 28, and fell 67-36 to its 4A foes. The Braves jumped out to a big lead, outscoring the Cowboys 22-11 in the first quarter and leading 37-23 at halftime. The third quarter was when the game was really put away, though, as Banks won the stanza by a score of 17-3. Tyson Martinez led Crook County with 12 points in the loss.

The following day, the Cowboys were back in Bend as originally planned. There, they took on Hockinson High School, based out of Brush Prairie, Washington. Crook County rode double-digit scoring performances from Tyson Martinez, Trenton West and Cameron Carr to a 63-47 win over the Hawks. With the victory the Cowboys are now 3-1 in games where they score more than 60 points.

On Thursday, Dec. 30, Crook County went toe-to-toe with 6A Mountain View (8-1, 0-0 Mountain Valley), a Bend school — which was playing just minutes from home — but lost 75-55.

PMG FILE PHOTO - Croook County's Eddie Freauff had a team-high 17 points in the Cowboys' loss to 6A Mountain View. The Cougars, ranked No. 10 in 6A, got off to a hot start on offense, scoring 47 points in the first half. The Cowboys kept the deficit in arm's reach for the first two quarters, but a 21-5 third quarter went in favor of Mountain View. From there, the rest of the matchup was academic. Eddie Freauff led all Cowboys with 17 points in the loss, and Tyson Martinez added another 13.

The Cowboys still have a few non-league games on the docket as they flip the calendar over to January 2022 and look to gain some momentum.

On Wednesday, Jan. 5, the team heads back to Summit High School to take on the Storm in Bend in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff. Summit (7-0, 0-0 Mountain Valley) is currently the No. 9 team in the 6A classification, and the Storm already beat Crook County 79-40 in the season opener.

Then, the Cowboys are back in Prineville for home games on both Friday, Jan. 7, and Saturday, Jan. 8, against two of the better teams in the 4A classification. Crook County first does battle with La Grande (5-1, 0-0 Greater Oregon), currently ranked No. 7 in 4A. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Prineville. The following day, the Cowboys square off with No. 8 Baker (6-3, 0-0 Greater Oregon), with the start time scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Crook County High School.
