The weekend's performances decided who won on given days and the final season points in each age group and event

PMG PHOTO BY LON AUSTIN - Kale Cornell endured a tough ride at the July 23-24 Central Oregon Pee Wee Rodeo event in Prineville. Cornell was fourth in season points in the Senior Boys division. The final Central Oregon Pee Wee rodeo of the season was held Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24, in Prineville, though awards will not be presented until later in the year at a banquet in Burns.

The weekend's performances not only decided who won on the given days, but also determined the final season's points in each age group and event.

Central Oregon Pee Wee rodeo has contestants in ages 3-14 divided into underage, junior, intermediate and senior age groups. In most of the events, contestants compete against each other regardless of gender. However, season totals are determined in both boys and girls categories.

Additionally, some events are not the same as in an adult rodeo. Contestants only need to stay on for six seconds in the rough stock events instead of eight. Instead of bull riding, the younger age groups have calf riding, followed by steer riding, then large steer riding. Contestants may also compete in saddle steer riding.

The underage group has goat tail untying instead of goat tying, and team roping has a dummy steer. In team roping, the junior group ropes a sled that is dragged by an adult with a horse. Once contestants are old enough to compete in regular team roping, they may compete as either a header or heeler — but instead of two youth athletes working together, each youth team roper competes with an adult.

Steer wrestling also has a twist, as contestants start in a chute with the steer rather than leaping from a horse. The accommodations are designed to teach youth athletes the skills they need to continue in rodeo as they grow older, but still eliminate as many safety concerns as possible.

With the season's four rodeos in the books, eight Central Oregon youths have officially pulled away as winners in their respective divisions.

In the underage group, Eva Gow topped the girls side with 245 total season points, while Nathan Nonella led all boys with 169. In the junior girls division, Josie Kimball earned not only the highest season point totals for her own age group, but for all age groups of both boys and girls, with 301 points. Junior boys division champ Cohen Earnest earned the highest season point total of any boy across all age groups with 286 points.

The intermediate girls division saw Kodee Kimball lead in season points with 185, while the intermediate boys season high point total was 235 points by Landon O'Malley. The senior girls season high-point honors went to Brinley Holyan, who took a narrow victory with 185.50 points. Meanwhile, Garrett Gallagher dominated the senior boys division, amassing 274 points to easily outpoint the field.
