Chelsea's Closet is looking for your votes.
The Tigard-based nonprofit group, which provides fun activities for sick children battling cancer, is in the running for a $1,000 grant. And all it takes is your vote.
Chelsea's Closet co-founder Allison Hicks is a finalist in Glamour magazine's 'Best of You' contest, which honors the nation's most inspirational women.
Since 2009, the closet has provided children battling cancer a few hours of escape and fun each month, by delivering outfits and costumes for the kids to Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Allison was nominated by a family member, and said she had no idea about 'Best of You' until she got a call from Glamour magazine.
'I was completely shocked and surprised,' she said.
If she wins, Chelsea's Closet will receive a $1,000 grand prize.
The proceeds go toward purchasing the costumes and accessories that the closet needs for children battling cancer.
'The money that comes in stays just for the kids,' Allison Hicks said.
The Closet plans to start monthly trips to The Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in March.
'We want to give them a couple of hours to get out and do something different,' said Chelsea's Closet co-founder - and Allison's husband - Jason Hicks in August. 'It gives them a chance to think about something different other than being sick.'
The Hicks know firsthand how important it is for sick children to have the chance to play and unwind.
The Hicks' daughter, Chelsea died from Wilms' tumor, a type of children's kidney cancer, in 2009. Her favorite past time was playing dress up.
For every vote received, Glamour will donate $1 to DKMS, a bone marrow donor center working to treat Leukemia patients.
The closet faces steep competition. Other 'Best of You' contenders include the Bruin Initiative, which offers free SAT prep classes to underprivileged youth in inner city Los Angeles.
Voting runs until Feb. 8.
