CC Barber of Scappoose wins lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit preliminary competition held Thursday
Miss Oregon CC Barber of Scappoose won the lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit category in a preliminary Miss America competition held Thursday evening at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nev.
The 53 Miss America contestants - one from each of the states and from the District of Colombia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - are divided into three competition groups. Preliminary judging started Monday, culminating in Saturday's televised event at 5 p.m. on the TLC network.
The preliminary competition categories include lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit, evening wear, talent, private interview and on-stage question. Each are weighted separately and factor in contestant chances to advance into the semi-finals.
Five panel judges ultimately cast ballots in the finals to determine the 2010 Miss America winner.
Barber won a $1,000 scholarship as the result of winning Thursday's preliminary swimsuit event, and improved her chances to advance.
Barber has been a consistent source of community pride for Scappoose, having worked her way through local and regional pageantry ranks to win the Miss Oregon crown in July for a chance at the Miss America title.
"I've never wanted anything more in my entire life," she told the Spotlight newspaper on Tuesday regarding Miss America's top prize. "I always watched it on TV. But I didn't think that that was ever a possibility for me. I never even considered it. I never dared to dream to be Miss America."
