"Hi Grandma, do you know who this is? I'm stuck, can you send me money?"

There are many scams targeting seniors. Recently, the justice department announced the largest-ever senior scam crackdown. Here are a few tips to protect you.

-Remember that seniors are also scammed from people they know. To protect yourself, ask before you act! Ask someone you trust to look over a potential investment/loan/deal.

-Ask for it in writing. When solicitors come knocking or calling, make them mail their request to you if you are unfamiliar with their company.

-Put your phone number on the 'Do Not Call' registry at 1-888-382-1222 to eliminate telemarketers. But remember, scammers may still call you since they are criminals, not telemarketers.

-Be wary of organizations that will tell you Medicare will pay for services or products. Research what you will be required to pay and ask for proof in writing.

-Never give out personal information like Social Security or credit card numbers over the phone unless you initiated the call.

-Set up direct deposit for benefit checks or use a locked mailbox.

-Watch for computer email and pop-up scams. Numerous 'phishing' scams target seniors with limited computer experience. If you receive a pop-up telling you your computer is in jeopardy, call a reputable computer company for help. Don't click on unsolicited links.

If you suspect you have fallen victim to a scam, don't be embarrassed, contact your bank to protect your accounts and ask a trusted friend or family member for help. At Prestige Care, together our community can help protect each other.
