Because of the coronavirus, as discussed in last month's article, our Life Enrichment Department decided to also be proactive and create "lemonade out of the lemons." April was Wellness Month and we focused on four key elements:
-Physical Wellness: Along with our progressive exercise programs we added Circuit Training, Noel's Chair Yoga/Tai Chi, Walking for Wellness, and the Perfect Peddler Program.
-Cognitive Wellness: Adding to our thriving Brain Builder programs, we held staff-led seminars on a variety of Wellness subjects, from Senior Hydration, Nutrition, Benefits of Daily Exercise and Fall Prevention.
-Emotional/Spiritual Wellness: Creative programs are booming with different Creative Therapies like Theater Improv. We added Arts and Crafts and more. With an uncertain date for the return of our spiritual programs, onsite staff is providing Worship and Non-Denominational services as well as utilizing live virtual streams.
-Nutritional Wellness: Christi, our Dietary Manager/Head Chef, is taking her scratch cooking amazingness to a whole new nutritional level by focusing on our residents' exercise habits and age-based Senior Nutrition. This is the title of her Wellness Seminar and Cooking Demo.
We have adapted and adopted permanently these changes into our activities process. It has increased our one-to-one approach with residents and awareness of the families' needs, as well as strengthened connections with them. In a way, the pandemic has opened the door for more community, and national outreach, by allowing us to see more potential growth from a further physical distance. By thinking outside the box, but at the same time staying within the lines, the staff and residents of River Terrace are succeeding and growing, even during troubled times.
