Author and mythologist Michael Meade will bring a blend of storytelling, poetry and discussion to Oregon City at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Atkinson Memorial Church, 710 Sixth St.

Proceeds from the “Finding Genius in Your Life” talk will support at-risk youth and multicultural projects of an Oregon City drug-prevention coalition of the school district, city officials and other community members. A New York native, Meade was tapped to provide engaging insight and inspiration to the community.

“This event intends to offer a fresh perspective on the role of mentors, parents and elders as a way of kicking off the new school year,” said Elizabeth Russell, coordinator for the Oregon City Together coalition. “We hope to see a lot of Oregon City’s parents, educators, counselors and community leaders participate.”

In what organizers are calling a “compelling and dynamic evening,” Meade will explore the original idea of the word “genius,” the natural spirit, inner qualities and unique gifts of a person. This inner spirit in each of us, he says, “seeks to be known” and desires to serve some greater purpose in life.

“Our genius calls to us at critical junctures and whenever change is required. Whether younger or older, our job is to answer the call,” Meade said. “For, enduring happiness can be found more in satisfying one’s inner spirit than in simply finding fame or acquiring a fortune.”

Meade notes his insights have been hard-won through decades of work in the trenches of mentoring youth, visiting prisons, assisting war veterans and fostering dialogues between genders and races. Through story, poetry and discussion, he is able to find common ground on hostile turf, working with Chicago gangs, in “barrios” in Los Angeles, on Native American reservations and with Sudanese refugees.

Tickets are $12 and available through Mosaic at mosaicvoices.org or by calling 800-233-6984. Meade will also lead a full-day mentoring workshop for $50 (scholarships available) on Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Register by Sept. 4 at octogether.word press.com.
