Thanks to the generosity of former Willamette View resident Alan Fibish, employees of the Milwaukie residential care community will have educational support at Clackamas Community College.

The Alan Fibish Scholarship was established in his memory through residents, families and friends at Willamette View. It is open to current employees who enroll at CCC.

Fibish’s 37-year career as an educator began in 1953 in the San Francisco Unified School District, and included 15 years as a school principal. A lifelong learner, Fibish earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California Berkeley and a master’s degree in marine biology. He also earned a teaching credential from San Francisco State University, and later a doctorate in education at UC Berkeley.

“When Alan and his wife, Carole, came to Willamette View, they took an immediate interest in the education and well-being of our employees, especially the young people working in dining services, many of whom came from modest means and were earning money for college,” said Craig Van Valkenburg, Willamette View CEO.

Residents at Willamette View have raised more than $40,000 toward the scholarship.

“This is unheard of — for residents of a retirement community to give their resources to help their employees further their education,” said Greg Fitzgerald, executive director of the CCC Foundation.
