A dog was found drowned in the Clackamas River, prompting the Oregon Humane Society to offer a $1,000 reward on Jan. 4 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

The original award of $500 was boosted to $1,000 thanks to contributions from the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Humane Society of the United States.

"We've had an outpouring of concern over this case, and I want to thank ALDF and HSUS for their support," said Sharon Harmon, OHS president and CEO. Harmon urged others who want to show their support for animals to make a gift directly to OHS, which relies entirely on private donations. Donations can be made at

The body of the dog was found by officials on Dec. 18. Officials determined the dog was in good health and well-groomed at the time of the incident. The dog had brown fur with black markings and a black muzzle. The dog was also wearing a collar, but had no ID tag or microchip. It's believed the dog died shortly before officials found the carrier.

According to the humane society, the pet carrier is believed to have been placed in the water from the boat ramp or from the Carver Bridge.

Under Oregon law, placing a live animal in a river with the intention of killing the animal is a felony. OHS, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and Clackamas County Dog Services are investigating the dog's death.

Anyone with information about the incident or the dog's owner is asked to call the Oregon Humane Society Investigations Department at 503-285-7722, extension 214. Information can also be reported online at
