During an open house on New Year's Day, he received lots of positive feedback

"The mayor and City Council are in awe," Philo said. "The police think it's now the nicest building in Gladstone."

Philo has said he has put about $220,000 into the 5,600-square-foot building at 825 Portland Ave. With the additional free labor and expertise that he's personally invested, he would estimate that FIRE Restoration's building is now worth $1.4 million.

"But it could be substantially more. I am getting an estimate of value soon."

Philo said he's trying to make a positive mark on Gladstone. As a volunteer at Gladstone Fire, he designed and built the firehouse's new facade, a few blocks away from his building on the city's main commercial street.

Philo's career as a remodeler started in 1983 doing all phases of rehabilitation of historic buildings in Portland's Pearl District. After working his way up to Street of Dreams projects in the remodeling business, in 2005, Philo started as a project manager for a fire-restoration business. He realized PHOTO COURTESY: GREG PHILO - The building on Portland Avenue now serves as office space for FIRE Restoration Inc.that was the career path he wanted to pursue.

Philo started his own business, FIRE Restoration, in 2013. He and his crew quickly outgrew a 600-square-foot apartment above his shop, located next to his home in unincorporated Oregon City.
