Milwaukie police help one resident who was hanging from a window get to safety

Officials evacuated an apartment building in Milwaukie as a fire broke out Monday afternoon.

It originated in a third floor apartment, and firefighters were able to stop it from spreading to other apartments.

"They quickly laddered the structure to contain the fire that had also reached the common attic as firefighter climbed the stairs to the third story to extinguish the fire," said Clackamas Fire spoksman Nathan Hon. "The fire was quickly knocked down but was traveling in the attic to the other apartments."

Arriving prior to the firefighters, the Milwaukie Police Department evacuated the apartment complex, going door to door, even breaking down doors to evacuate people and pets. An officer also helped a resident who was hanging from a window get to safety. Unable to get out and hanging from the third story, the male resident was saved by an officer and a bystander who quickly found a ladder on a pickup truck in the parking lot and raised it to the man.

Officials are still on scene checking for hot spots. No injuries were reported.
