After 7 years, Sharon Soliday to resign effective June 30
Sharon Soliday said she will be resigning from Gladstone School Board service effective June 30.
Soliday has served on the board for seven years, and is currently the board chair.
Soliday had considered stepping aside last year after her daughter graduated from Gladstone High School and headed to college out of state. But with three new board members already stepping onto the board, she said that she believed it was in the best interest of staff and district leadership "to retain experienced folks" for at least another year.
"Serving the Gladstone School Board has been an incredible privilege," Soliday said. "I'm proud of the work I've been a part of and believe Gladstone has been a great fit for me personally. District leadership supports trauma-informed practices and growth of the whole child far more than banging a fist on the table about any one academic score in any given year."
Soliday plans to continue to advocate for kids as chair of the board of directors of Children First for Oregon. She expressed her gratitude to the school district for an experience as a board member that has "in many ways" prepared her to be a better advocate for children throughout the state.
"Skills I learned at the local level will be very helpful in this expanded advocacy role," Soliday said. "But with regards to Gladstone, I really have received far more from my role on the school board than I ever gave in the last seven years. And be assured, I'll continue to watch the district grow and change over time. I just won't have the gavel in my hand."
If you've been a registered voter for at least a year in the Gladstone School District, you're invited to apply for appointment to the soon-to-be-empty seat of the Gladstone School Board. The term of appointment for Position 4 will be July 12 through June 30, 2019. Board members plan to review applications from interested persons, conduct interviews with the applicants, and make the appointment at their July meeting. Interested persons should complete the application by June 1 and return it to the superintendent's office, 17789 Webster Road. The application is available at gladstone.k12.or.us.
