Happy Valley chili cookoff to benefit first responders
Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes will host its inaugural Five-Alarm Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11667 S.E. Stevens Road, unincorporated Happy Valley.
Proceeds for the event will benefit three local first responder organizations: Oregon Fallen Badge, Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association and Oregon Service Member Relief Fund.
"In mid-September, there are a number of events and ceremonies to honor the victims and first responders who were killed during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001," said Mindy Rocha-Barella, location manager of Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes. "While it's important that we remember the events of 9/11, we wanted to host a family-friendly activity that both honors and supports the first responders that currently serve in our local community."
Each team will be composed of four members and will have 90 minutes to complete their chili masterpiece. Cooking will begin at 4 p.m. with judging commencing at 5:30 p.m. At that time, the public also will be invited to sample the teams' chili and make donations to the specific charity identified by each participating team. Winners will be announced at 8 p.m.
There will be live music, other food and beverages, as well as a children's activity area. Teams of four can register through Sept. 6. For all the details, visit sunnysidechimes.com/chili.
