Local lands largest marlinin Hawaiian tournament
Howard Dietrich, co-owner of the Mill End Store in Milwaukie, recently won three awards for catching a 652.1-pound Pacific blue marlin at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.
Dietrich boated the heaviest fish in the tournament 19 minutes from hooking it.
"We kept the fish working," Dietrich said. "It jumped several times, and we kept the right amount of drag, and we just wore it out. Wore me out, too!"
Dietrich's Malibu Marlin Club-Topanga Beach team went to the top of the leaderboard in dramatic style by catching the largest fish in the tournament. Those bonus points knocked Australia's Moreton Bay Game Fish Club to second place after leading the tournament for four days.
Dietrich's team was led by Buzz Colton and included anglers Fred Duerr and Doug Hays.
Howard Dietrich and the Malibu Marlin Club won the following awards in Hawaii last month:
• Duke Kahanamoku Memorial Award for heaviest billfish boated
• The Edward D. Sultan Award for heaviest billfish boated on heavy tackle 80-pound test
• Governor's Trophy for highest team score on billfish points
