Clackamas Fire lieutenant, West Linn business owner plan 'Solstice Sip' repeat

West Linn residents Lindsay and Brandon Paxton on June 21 raised more than $10,000 for the Alzheimer's Association's Longest Day to help find a cure for the disease.

The Paxtons hope their summer-kickoff "Solstice Sip" becomes an annual charity event that outgrows their home in future years. Both in their 30s, the Paxtons hope "Solstice Sip" eventually outlives them.

They partnered with the Longest Day for the first "Solstice Sip" because their close friend's father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in December.

"It just so happened that I had a coffee date scheduled with Stephanie Foster from the Alzheimer's Association the day after learning about his diagnosis," Lindsay Paxton said. "I had never heard about the Longest Day until that time."

Based on the sequence of learning about their friend's family news and the Longest Day, they committed to putting together an event one year earlier than originally planned.

They started planning the event hoping to raise $5,000, but almost 80 people attended the event, raising $10,500. Guests who donated over the recommended $75 for dinner and wine tastings received one raffle ticket for every additional $10 donation.

"It ended up being an awesome event," Brandon said.

In addition to crushing the fundraising goal, Lindsay said the most incredible thing about the event was how 100 percent of the first 15 groups asked to sponsor the event said yes.

"Thanks to the generosity of our community, local wineries and sponsors, friends and family, the event came together successfully and reminded us that people truly want to give back," she said.
