The Nelons bring message of kindness to Beavercreek
"We live in perilous times; bad news is all around us. So our message is one of hope and kindness," said Kelly Nelon Clark, a member of The Nelons, a modern gospel group that will appear in concert Friday, July 19, at the Grandview Baptist Church in Beavercreek.
"We are so looking forward to this. It's our only stop on the West Coast, and we love that part of the country," Nelon Clark said.
She added that the best thing about the upcoming event is that she gets to travel and perform with her family: husband, Jason Clark, and daughters, Amber and Autumn.
In 2017, The Nelons, who are based in Dallas, Georgia, were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the industry's highest award.
The group also earned the 2017 Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Bluegrass/Country/Roots Recorded Song of the Year for their hit release, "When Grandpa Sang Amazing Grace."
"It is such an honor and a testimony to my father. His faithfulness to what we do made it easy for us," Nelon Clark said, noting that her father, Rex Nelon, was a member of the LeFevres, a Southern gospel group active in the 1970s. After retiring from the LeFevres, Nelon formed the Rex Nelon Singers, which then became the current group.
"We sing a lot of different styles, which we call new American music," Nelon Clark said.
"We also sing a little bit of country; the songs people have grown up with," she said.
Her daughters are both in their 20s, so they appeal to a younger audience, but in general, "we have a well-rounded musical concept because we want to reach all audiences."
Nelon Clark added that in all the group's songs, "kindness is a theme for us. If you show kindness, you can change attitudes. If you show kindness, you can change a heart."
