Bike, car crash along Springwater Trail detour route
Portland's closure of the a section of the Springwater Trail between 45th and 55th avenues has detoured bike commuters through Milwaukie neighborhood streets.
At approximately 8:25 a.m. on Oct. 10, Milwaukie police responded to a crash in which Jalesa Kindred was driving her red 2005 Toyota Camry southeast on Regents Drive, when bicyclist Peter Matthews crossed in front of her as he entered the intersection at Rainbow Lane from the north. Police reported that the front passenger side of Kindred's vehicle struck Matthews and his bicycle, causing him minor injuries.
Kindred explained she was driving in the middle of the residential roadway to avoid a vehicle sticking out of a driveway into the street when the crash occurred. Matthews told police when he entered the intersection and saw Kindred's vehicle, he tried to swing wide around the front of her car to avoid being hit.
Both the driver and bicyclist cooperated with police during the investigation. Matthews was transported to a local hospital to have his minor injuries assessed and treated. No citations were issued.
Construction on the Springwater Trail's 45th Avenue bridge began July 16, with expected completion in early December 2019.
