District posts notice about death, saying the boy's family gave permission to share cause

Pyschologists and members of a Crisis Response Team were at Holcomb Elementary School in Oregon City this week to support students following the recent death of a fourth-grade student.

Holcomb ElementaryOregon City School District Superintendent Larry Didway posted a notice to families about the death on Dec. 11, saying the boy's family gave the district permission to share that the boy took his own life at home the previous day.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends," Didway wrote.

Didway said psychologists and members of a Crisis Response Team would be at the school this week to support students. The school is holding an event for parents on Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. about how to talk to young children about death and suicide.

It's really important to reach out for help, if you or your child is not feeling well," Didway wrote. "Suicide should not be an option. We have people on staff that can help families who are worried about suicidal ideation of a child or family member."

If you or someone needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
