The Mt. Hood Express bus service is adding new hours for winter recreation, commuting and tourism.

Commuters and travelers to Mount Hood are in luck. The Mt. Hood Express is expanding its service to offer transportation seven times daily, seven days a week.

PMG FILE PHOTO - The Mt. Hood Express provided 72,130 rides in 2019 alone. There will also be an additional run added to the evenings from December through March. Four more runs of the village shuttle will be added daily, from Sandy and Rhododendron, and service will be expanded during the winter weekends and holidays to accommodate visitors.

Last year, according to a release from the Mt. Hood Express, the route provided 72,130 rides, which was 8% more than it did the year before.

"Mt. Hood Express provides essential transit services for our residents, as well as outdoor adventurers," said Teresa Christopherson, Clackamas County's project manager for the Mt. Hood Express. "It's a way for everyone to experience Mount Hood, and gives access to those who are unable to drive to and from the mountain."

All buses are equipped to accommodate those with mobility devices, bikes and winter recreation equipment. In 2019, riders towed 6,364 bicycles along on their trip up the mountain via Mt. Hood Express. It's only $2 one-way or $5 for a day pass for riders with gear. Children under age 6 ride free.

"We keep fares low so anyone can ride, no matter what their income is," said Christopherson, who explained that some people have limited transportation options, while others avoid road conditions that cause driving risks. "The Mt. Hood Express offers access to all!"

The Express gained three new 38-passenger buses, which were placed into service in November 2019 with the help of grant funds from Western Federal Lands and the Oregon Department of Transportation, as well as HB2017 dollars.

"The new buses will ensure safe and reliable transportation service on Mount Hood," the release from Mt. Hood Express said.

"Clackamas County and the city of Sandy's Sandy Metro Area (SAM) transit service have proudly worked together, along with support from Mt. Hood Ski Bowl and Timberline Lodge, for over 15 years to provide smooth and essential connections between the Portland area, Sandy and Mount Hood," added Christopherson. "It's a successful partnership that continues to look toward the future and meeting the growing transportation needs of its riders on the mountain."

To keep up with changes to routes and to track buses, Express riders can also now download and use the DoubleMap Bus Tracking app on Apple and Android phones.

Because of the increase in services, Mt. Hood Express is recruiting more qualified bus drivers. For more information about working for Mt. Hood Express, call 503-489-0921 or go to
