Suspect arrested for fatal hit-and-run near Milwaukie
Clackamas County deputies have arrested Kevin Charles Derrick, 30, of Milwaukie for allegedly killing Gladstone resident Robert Eugene Keys, 59, in a Sept. 19 hit-and-run crash.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, police arrested Derrick at the Rodeway Inn at the Airport, 9723 N.E. Sandy Blvd., Portland, after Derrick's suspect vehicle, a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, was found parked at the location. Derrick was transported to the Clackamas County Jail and booked on charges including failing to perform the duties of a driver and criminally negligent homicide.
At approximately 7:34 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle whose driver did not stop to check on Keys and was last seen driving westbound on Southeast King Road near Milwaukie. The first deputy who arrived on scene located Keys not breathing and without a pulse. The deputy immediately began CPR until personnel from Clackamas Fire District #1 arrived to take over care. Despite medical efforts, Keys remained dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle, believed to be a 2000-06 model with Oregon "Trail Blazer" plates, also likely has damage to its front passenger side. Investigators believe the vehicle might be a Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade.
