Dr. Heidi Houchen of VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Clackamas became the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association's new president in March.
Houchen's term as OVMA president runs through February 2022 as she leads the nonprofit board of the professional membership organization of more than 1,000 veterinarians.
Houchen graduated from Washington State University Veterinary School in 1992. She joined VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists in 2006, where she directs interns and the Critical Care Blood Bank.
Houchen writes and lectures regionally about her special interests of transfusion medicine, toxicology and trauma/CPR.
She told The Washington Post in a recent interview that she treats several cases a week of pets finding marijuana now that it was legalized in Oregon.
"Dogs used to kind of chew on the stash growing in the basement. Now they're finding a big bag of gummy bears," she said.
In her free time, she and her family enjoy hiking around the Pacific Northwest mountains and beaches, traveling to Canada to visit orcas and watching the occasional college softball game.
