Suburban graveyards included in 'Historic Cemeteries of Portland'
Teresa Bergen and Heide Davis, the authors of "Historic Cemeteries of Portland, Oregon," which came out last month, have included some suburban graveyards as part of their tour guide.
The book's 25 cemeteries include suffragists, spiritualists, Romani kings, politicians and murderers. American chemist Linus Pauling is buried at Oswego Cemetery, Bob's Red Mill co-founder Charlee Moore is at Happy Valley's Lincoln Memorial Park, public library namesake Florence Ledding is at Milwaukie Pioneer Cemetery and Oregon Trail pioneer Charles Barlow is buried at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City. Other gravestones commemorate a photographer who captured the golden age of Broadway musicals and a celebrity orangutan.
Bergen and Davis say the Portland area's historic cemeteries are "some of the most beautiful and overlooked cultural treasures." Their book seeks to encourage residents to visit their area's cemeteries that "full of fascinating secrets," which they call "perfect spots for walking, biking and birding." In each chapter, they talk about cemetery history, remarkable headstones, highlight a few interesting residents, mention other recreational opportunities where applicable and sometimes include an "eerie tale."
The book is available for $21.99 at arcadiapublishing.com.
