Clackamas County, city officials say addition of word 'community' helps promote an inclusive, welcoming and vibrant space.

With the addition of the word "community," a Milwaukie building constructed as a senior center in 1980 has entered 2022 with a new name and renewed focus on serving people of all ages.COURTESY PHOTO: NCPRD - Clackamas County commissioners joined city officials to celebrate the Milwaukie Community Center name change with a sign-unveiling ceremony on Nov. 29.

Operated by North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District since 1992, the building in North Clackamas Park has formally changed its name to the Milwaukie Community Center to better represent its purpose and commitment to serving all residents.

City and county officials say the center's new name helps promote an inclusive, welcoming and vibrant space. Milwaukie Community Center now serves all ages with events, learning opportunities and social services such as Meals on Wheels.

County commissioners, NCPRD staff and partners celebrated the name change with a sign-unveiling ceremony on Nov. 29. The event also recognized name changes to the center's two volunteer boards, the Milwaukie Community Center Advisory Board and the Milwaukie Community Center Foundation.

The process of changing the name began two years ago when the Center Community Advisory Board recommended and unanimously supported the idea.

On Aug. 3, the Milwaukie City Council unanimously supported the name change after Council President Kathy Hyzy observed that the center was available to anyone in the region,

and the group agreed to replace "Milwaukians" with "residents throughout the region" in the first sentence of the resolution. On Aug. 19, the Board of County Commissioners, acting as the Board of Directors for NCPRD, gave their final approval to change the name of the Milwaukie Center to the Milwaukie Community Center. The new name was also approved by the NCPRD advisory committee and the city's Parks and Recreation Board.

Officials say that while the name is new, the Milwaukie Community Center's core values and services remain the same. The center will continue to provide a wide range of senior-focused resources, as well as recreational and enrichment programs for all ages.
