They persevere despite inclement weather and an ever-changing format
SUNRIVER Clackamas River Racquet Clubs 65-and-over Womens 6.0 team won the Pacific Northwest Sectional Tennis Championships, held at the Athletic Club of Bend in late June.
Final scores in the pro-set match were 8-3, 8-6, and 6-8 against Sprinker Tennis Center of Tacoma. Six Washington and Oregon 6.0 super-senior womens club teams advanced to sectionals, culminating a season that started in January.
Clackamas River Racquet Club captain Dody Lang of Portland led the 10-member Clackamas-based team, which includes some of Portlands oldest active women players, with two 79-year-olds and an 83-year-old.
Four local players were on the team Pat Chapman and Donna Kisler of Oregon City, and Kathy Cooper and Jackie Wilken of Milwaukie.
Scheduled for June 23-25 in Sunriver, the sectional competitions for the 65-plus mens and womens age groups were nearly rained out. USTA officials were forced to resort to eight-game pro-sets and even 10-point tie-breaks to determine match outcomes during the three-day meet. Lacking a sufficient number of indoor courts, competitors played as early as 5:30 a.m. at the Athletic Club of Bend, before local members took over the BAC courts.
We persevered through all the difficulties and format changes harried USTA officials threw at us, said Lang, And we came through in style.
