Prep football: Putnam run game pounds Hillsboro, 56-21
Putnam's Landy Wilson rushed for 104 yards and four touchdowns, and Isaiah Schumacher added a team-high 128 yards rushing and one score, pacing the Kingsmen to a 56-21 Northwest Oregon Conference home win Friday over the Hillsboro Spartans.
The Kingsmen (3-3, 2-2 NWOC) scored touchdowns on five of eight first-half possessions to open a 35-7 halftime lead, and Giovanni Hernandez returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to help put the game out of reach.
Hillsboro's Curran Mitzel finished with 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and completed 10 of 25 passes for another 108 yards for the Spartans (1-5, 1-3).
After Mitzel scored on a 73-yard run to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead, Putnam answered with an eight-play, 66-yard scoring drive that ended with Hernandez scoring on a 23-yard run.
The Kingsmen got the ball back after a Hillsboro punt and needed one play for Schumacher to break a 61-yard touchdown run for the go-ahead score with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Wilson scored on touchdown runs of 14, 4 and 2 yards to help extend the Kingsmen's lead to 35-7.
Of Putnam's 499 yards total offense, 475 came on the ground. In addition to Schumacher and Wilson each surpassing 100 yards rushing, Hernandez had 107 yards on nine carries, and Marcellas Kenion added 84 yards on two carries.
Putnam travels Thursday to play a 7 p.m. game at Sandy, while Hillsboro is at home to take on Milwaukie at Hare Field.
