Rex Putnam sees first-half lead disappear
MILWAUKIE — Rex Putnam had David Douglas doubled up in the first half only to see the Scots rush back to claim the 84-70 win in summer league basketball last Monday.
Rex Putnam grabbed the lead right away when Kaden Watzig chased down the opening tip and converted a layup. He added a sideline 3 on the next trip to put the Kingsmen up 5-0 before the game was a minute old.
Jeremy Devoe converted a three-point play from the block, and Garrett Sholty blocked a Scots' shot then hit two free throws at the other end to give Rex Putnam its biggest lead at 32-16 midway through the second quarter.
The Scots quickly closed the margin when guard Jermaine Robinson attacked the rim three times in a row, prompting a Rex Putnam timeout barely a minute into the second half.
The Scots weren't about to slow down.
Trenton Templeton swiped a steal and came down the middle of the lane for another two that knotted the score at 47.
Moments later, Robinson pulled down a long rebound and went the length of the floor, straight at the only defender in his path before lifting the ball over the front of the rim to put David Douglas in front for the first time 51-49.
Robinson hit a sideline 3-pointer to put the Scots in front for good early in the fourth quarter.
