The Clackamas Community College women's basketball team chased South Region foe SW Oregon throughout its season opener and was unable to track down the Lakers in a 68-59 loss to open the Cougars' Thanksgiving tournament last Friday.
Clackamas found itself within seven points at the break, but SW Oregon scored the first three buckets out of the locker room to build the margin to 40-27, prompting the Cougars to call an early timeout.
Clackamas returned to the court with a full-court press that proved effective for a few minutes. Mary Stewart swiped a steal that led to a Landy Williams layup, and C.J. Buckely missed a 3-pointer, but got the ball back and drove to the hoop to get Clackamas back within single digits.
The Lakers soon figured out the seams in the defense and grew its biggest lead of the game at 61-43 with four minutes to play.
The Cougars got 3s from Peyton Elliott and Stewart and had a chance to draw back within single digits only to have another long ball rattle the rim and pop out. SW Oregon's Abby Neff pounced on the rebound and went the distance for a layup at the other end that put the game out of reach 65-51 as the clock slipped under two minutes.
Clackamas put on a final desperate rush with Ambreece Gaskins knocking down a 3, followed by Williams with a steal and layup. Buckely added a pair of free throws, and Stewart tipped away an inbounds pass. Clackamas tried for a 3, but had to settle for an offensive rebound and a single point from the free-throw line instead.
The play brought Clackamas within six points, but the Lakers were able to seal the victory on 3-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line over the final 30 seconds.
Clackamas bounced back Saturday with a 103-77 win over Pierce after erupting for 33 first-quarter points, which allowed the Cougars to carry a double-digit lead most of the way. Gaskins was 8-for-12 (.667) from long range and finished with a game-high 32 points.
The Cougars finished the tournament with a 102-99 loss to an Umpqua squad that reached the Northwest championship game last season. Clackamas took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter only to see Taylor Stricklin connect on a 3-pointer that put Umpqua in front with 0:52 left.
Stewart led the Cougars with 26 points.
