|#7 North Clackamas Christian|
The North Clackamas Christian boys basketball team fended off a Valley 10 playoff contender with a 61-56 home win over Open Door on Thursday night.
Luke Nelson drilled a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter, and Caleb Matias sank two more long balls in the second to send the Saints into halftime with a commanding 33-15 lead.
Open Door got the hot hand coming out of the break, hitting five 3s in the third quarter to cut the margin in half.
North Clackamas answered with Isaac Minne driving the baseline before scooting a pass through the lane to Braden Young for a layup. Matias followed with a triple, and the Saints took a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Open Door chomped into the lead once again with rookie Isaiah Wolcott hitting a 3-pointer, followed by a three-point play in the lane on back-to-back possessions. Johnny Cristurean sent a long pass ahead to Wolcott, who finished a layup while crashing to the floor to bring the Huskies within six points with four minutes to play.
North Clackamas punched back with Minne hitting a runner in the lane.
On the next trip, Luke Nelson snagged an offensive rebound and put a shot back up before his feet touched the ground. The ball circled the rim once, spun on the edge of the iron, then took another half-circle around before dropping through the net for a 59-51 lead as the clock ticked under a minute.
The Huskies got one last gasp when the Saints missed a free throw, and Open Door's Isaac Van Vleet sank a 3 at the other end to make it a one-possession game with 0:05 left.
North Clackamas ended the suspense when Young knocked down a pair of free throws.
Nelson, Matias and Young all shared the team lead with 16 points apiece for the Saints.
No. 7-ranked North Clackamas (17-4) locked itself securely into the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Valley 10 tournament.
