After almost two years on the shelf, the Clackamas track teams decided they'd better make the most of the 2021 season.
So that's just what the Cavaliers did at the Mt. Hood Conference district meet, held May 15 at Barlow High School. The Clackamas girls team stepped up to finish third in its half of the meet, while the Cavalier boys were a solid fourth. Barlow won the women's team title, while Central Catholic took top honors for the boys.
In the girls meet, the Cavaliers were led by sophomore Emelia Puerta — she won both the 200 and 400 meters — and a handful of runner-up finishers. Puerta stepped up to take the 400 with a personal-best time of 59.75, then came back later in the day to take the 200 with another PR of 26.81.
Also notching top-three finishes for Clackamas were: Erin Taylor, second in the 200 at 27.76; Jasmine Fletcher, second in the 1,500 at 5:19.32; Olivia Iparraguirre, second in the 3,000 at 11:21.41; the 4 x 400 relay team of Regina Diaz-Garcia, Iparraguirre, Taylor and Puerta, second at 4:15.17; Delaney Neal, second in the high jump at 4-10; Isabel Boros, third in the discus at 86-9; and Ava Le-Previtera, third in the javelin at 102-8.
The Clackamas boys were led by jumpers Ryan Lewis and Vanndon Heard, with Lewis (a senior) winning the high jump and Heard (a sophomore) topping the field in the triple jump. Lewis won the MHC high jump title with a clearance of 6 feet, while Heard took the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 38-5.
Other top-three Clackamas finishers at district included: David Gesl, second in the 400 at 51.72; Mason Williams, second in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 44.97 and third in the 110 high hurdles at 17.49; Benjamin Moffett, second in the javelin at 174-8; Andrew Lin, third in the 100 at 11.56; and the 4 x 400 relay team of Gesl, Abe Khal, Lewis and Lin, third at 3:36.02.
