Newly elected commissioner promises 'open mind'
Thank you for electing me as your next Oregon City commissioner for seat No. 4. I am honored by the trust you have instilled in me and very excited to get to work. Over the course of the campaign, I was able to meet people from across our city and share my thoughts on issues that are important to you.
This election was about listening to your questions, concerns and ideas, and I pledge to continue to seek out and be guided by your input. I want to encourage all Oregon City residents to get involved in your neighborhood association and to provide input on issues that come before the commission. We need to hear from you!
Looking forward, we have some big items that need some serious time and attention:
a new police facility,
a new facility for Parks and Public Works (Fir Street property),
the future of urban renewal,
the advancement of the Willamette Falls Legacy project,
resolving the dispute of Waterboard Park, and
the growing homeless population.
I will approach each of these issues with an open mind, looking for alternatives/options to consider, and with a determination to attain public input to guide these important decisions.
Thank you again for your votes and the opportunity to serve. I look forward to working for our city!
Rachel Lyles Smith is the Oregon City commissioner-elect for the seat being vacated by current City Commissioner Renate Mengelberg.
