Michael Hall: Keep your camera handy and send your picture(s) with the date, time and location

COURTESY PHOTO - Rail cars carrying crude oil must display a '1267' label such as this one seen last month in Portland.Rumor has it that toxic, highly flammable tar-sands crude oil may be traveling along the Amtrak line through Milwaukie, Oregon City and Canby.

Confirming this is difficult, because in Oregon freight-train schedules, routes, cargoes and destinations are not made available. This much we do know: Rail cars carrying crude oil display a 1267 label. And many carrying tar-sands crude oil also bear the warning, "Toxic Inhalation Hazard." How serious is that..? A quick web search shows one of the many tar-sands toxins, hydrogen sulfide, is said to be "very poisonous," causing "death within moments."

Alerting all train spotters: Photos of rail cars with these warnings would confirm the rumor. So keep your camera handy and send your picture(s) with the date, time and location to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and to Raymond Rendleman, editor of the Clackamas Review, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The photos would be used to raise public awareness about the potential danger.

Michael Hall is a Milwaukie resident.
