Mark Aasland: 'I can say with confidence he has earned my vote and made our city better'

It's rare that citizens get a trial run of their elected officials, but in Happy Valley, this year's City Council race allows us just that.

After a one-and-a-half-year test run with Councilor David Emami at the helm, I can say with confidence he has earned my vote and made our city better.

Since his appointment on March 5, 2019, Emami has proven that he was the right choice and the leader we needed. Emami was the only new face at the negotiating table between Happy Valley and North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District (NCPRD), and together they were able to reach a settlement after years of litigation. Happy Valley is now its own parks provider and will be able to serve its residents more effectively.

During his time in office, Emami also has led the way toward improving our infrastructure without raising taxes; added new sidewalks around our schools and parks; helped build an all-abilities playground; worked with the community to make the city more inclusive; and perhaps most importantly, he stepped up during a global pandemic by leading the way to provide COVID-19 relief assistance to 49 Happy Valley small businesses.

During both the pandemic and the recent wildfires, Emami has kept our community safe and informed.

In March 2019, I personally went through all of the applications and sat through all of the interviews for the vacant City Council position now occupied by David, and what is also impressive is that he has delivered on everything he said he would accomplish if appointed.

He was extremely prepared, polished and professional during his interview, and he has carried that with him as a councilor. These days it's rare to find a nonpartisan politician who is honest, hard-working and respectful — no matter who he is talking to or what their political party, and that's what we have in Emami.

This November we have the chance to elect Emami to serve four more years — and after watching his performance for the past year and a half, this will be the easiest vote I cast all year.

This election cycle, let's choose the proven leader who has shown he has what it takes for the job. Please vote for David Emami!

Mark Aasland is a Happy Valley resident.
