Jordan Miller of Oregon City: Lawmakers should be focused on solutions that truly put money back into patients' pockets

Currently, Congress is working to find a way to lower the costs of prescription medications. And while I am happy that they are addressing this important issue, their current approach worries me.Jordan Miller

Under their proposed Medicare negotiation, politicians would be able to set the prices of prescription medications. While this measure could save some patients money at the pharmacy counter, the bill could have negative impacts on Americans across the country. By fixing the prices of prescription medications, Congress will effectively limit pharmaceutical companies' ability to invest in research and development. Sadly, this could mean fewer new cures and treatment options for patients in the years ahead. While this might seem insignificant to a healthy individual, there are so many patients with chronic illnesses and rare diseases who are relying on these potential, future cures to help them get back to health.

Our lawmakers should be focused on larger, more comprehensive solutions that truly put money back into the pockets of patients. Insurance industry reforms and pharmacy benefit manager evaluations could ensure that patients receive their treatments at lower costs, without throwing sand in the gears of innovation.

I urge Oregon's legislative delegation to vote for policies that will truly help patients.
