Emily Lau: City councilor welcoming, intelligent, diligent, fair and kind to longtime resident who recently became U.S. citizen

Here are the reasons why I will vote for Lisa Batey as our next mayor.

• The parks I have come to cherish and enjoy daily are the direct result of her hard work and dedication on the planning committee. I have witnessed and admired her hands-on approach with fundraising and advocacy with the Parks Foundation.Emily Lau

• A few years ago, when my family encountered difficulties with back-property taxes and sought help on social media, she was the only person (from the city) who answered and brainstormed with us. I didn't feel that she did that for votes, but rather as a decent and supportive fellow citizen who has experience with property law.

• Lisa attends cultural events and engages with artists and cultural bearers. On more than one occasion, she provided housing and logistical support to the artists of my local nonprofit. She has presented Milwaukie as a welcoming and creative place to be.

• Lisa supports local businesses by her actual presence and patronage. I have read transcripts of many city council meetings, and find her positions on supporting and attracting local businesses to be intelligent and practical.

• I have recently become a U.S. citizen after living here for over 20 years. I find Lisa to be well-travelled, welcoming, intelligent, diligent, fair and kind. She is exactly the kind of person I want as my mayor, regardless of what people say about her professional history.

Emily Lau is a resident of Milwaukie, owner of Cloud Pine Tea+Culture, the artistic director of Big Mouth Society and a music teacher at Reed College.
