by: CONTRIBUTED - Estacada High School Counselor Jim Carey has been named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars.Estacada High School Counselor Jim Carey must be walking a little taller having just received national recognition.

Carey has been selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the The National Society of High School Scholars.

Carey is a longtime Estacada School District employee. In his nearly 30 years with the district, Carey has worked as a junior high social studies teacher, high school dean of students and counselor in addition to coaching basketball and football.

As a counselor, Carey said he gets to know nearly every high school student by their third or fourth years.

“They all have a story,” he said of 600 or so students at the high school. “Every one of them.”

He’s kept busy making students’ schedules and addressing students’ individual needs to function well in an academic environment.

Carey was nominated for the honor by Estacada High School Senior Brooklyn Scholz.

Student members of the society may nominate the educator “who made the most significant contribution to their academic career.”

The nomination came as a complete shock to Carey.

“I feel very honored to be recognized as part of this prestigious group,” he said. “I don’t know what I did to deserve this; I feel like I’m just doing my job. I know that sounds a little John Wayne-ish but it’s true.”

As an Educator of Distinction, Carey will be presented with a certificate and is invited to attend free member events around the country among other benefits.
