Barton begins planning for Christmas event
Although many people may be anticipating summer at this time of year, leaders in the Barton community are looking well beyond.
Don Burton is leading a group of community and business leaders in Barton in organizing a local Christmas event. Called Christmas at Barton, the event will take place every Saturday in December later this year.
The weekly holiday gatherings will feature several elements, including festive lights, Christmas trees for sale and hay rides. Santa Claus is also expected to make an appearance.
Horse-drawn hayrides will connect participants from the Barton Store to the Barton Community Baptist Church, where there will be a live nativity scene.
Burton hopes to have Christmas trees available for purchase at both Barton Store and the church.
It's also his goal to have "a lot of lights" in places around the community, including the Barton Store, Barton Memorial and houses of Barton residents who are interested in participating.
"It's in the working phase," Burton said. "(Local businesses) would benefit from it. We'll have a lot of music and a lot of lights."
Burton is on the lookout for food vendors who would be interested in participating in the event.
"We hope to have concession stands," he said.
Burton encouraged anyone interested in participating to contact him at 503-709-7536.
"We need to start getting our commitments down," he noted.
He's looking forward to both planning Christmas at Barton and seeing it become a reality later this year.
"I think big, and I take what I can get," he said. "(The event) will be worth it because of the kids."
