EVENT REFLECTS ON SERVICE, SACRIFICE
The flags at the Estacada Veterans Memorial were at half staff earlier this week as the community paused to remember those who have sacrificed for the country.
The morning of Monday, May 28, began with the American Legion Carl Douglas Post's annual Memorial Day breakfast. After that, community members gathered at the Veterans Memorial for a ceremony led by the Estacada Area Support Our Troops Foundation. Along with reading the names of 42 soldiers from the Estacada area who were killed in action, the ceremony also included speeches by community members such as Estacada Area Support Our Troops Foundation president Dennis Dahrens, who read a piece written by minister Billy Graham; Estacada Area Support Our Troops Foundation member and memorial designer John Nieder, who reflected that words often do not seem like enough to thank soldiers who have sacrificed their lives; and American Legion Carl Douglas Post Adjutant Flynn Phillips.
"(They) died to make the freedoms we have possible," said Phillips, as he shared stories of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.
After the flags were raised at the ceremony's conclusion, Estacada Area Support Our Troops foundation secretary Rita Perry encouraged attendees to thank veterans on Memorial Day and throughout the year.
Following the ceremony, there was a dedication of the Estacada Veterans Memorial's new wall honoring first responders, as well as a reading of names of veterans and first responders on new bricks that will soon be installed. During the dedication for the first responders wall, Estacada Rural Fire District Division Chief Jason Crowe noted his gratitude for the addition.
