Event connects students with games, school supplies
Estacada Community Outreach is inviting local children to celebrate the end of summer and prepare for the upcoming school year.
The group's sixth annual Back to School Blast will connect young attendees with school supplies and carnival games. Additionally, students and their families are invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch of hot dogs, chips and drinks. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Clackamas Valley Baptist Church, 29275 S.E. Eagle Creek Road.
Pam Ellis, a member of Estacada Community Outreach, said the group is excited to help families as the school year begins.
"It's an opportunity for us to reach out to the community," she said. "We know people are in need and we want to share the love of Christ in a tangible way."
During the event, students can pick out a backpack and school supplies they'll need for the upcoming year, including pencils, crayons, markers, erasers and scissors. Along with carnival games, there will be a bounce house and crafts, and attendees will be able to enjoy snow cones and cotton candy.
Ellis enjoys watching the children's enthusiasm throughout the day.
"It's thrilling to see when a little kid comes in and they're so excited to pick out the color of their backpack," Ellis said. "We just want to put a smile on their faces."
At the last Back to School Blast, 206 students received backpacks and school supplies, and members of Estacada Community Outreach are eager to continue helping this year.
"We hope the parents feel relief that they don't have to buy the school supplies," Ellis said.
She encouraged any families interested in attending to join in the festivities.
"It's a fun, fee day," Ellis encouraged. "Come out and have some fun."
