There are numerous projects and drives for those who wish to volunteer or donate during this season
Many people find their holiday spirit through helping others, and for those in this category, there are numerous opportunities to do so in the Estacada area. Whether you're interested in supporting free meals for families or connecting children with Christmas gifts, there's likely a project around town for you to support. The "Estacada Christmas Adopt a Family 2018" Facebook group allows donors to connect local families that have children with toys, food and household items. Send a Facebook message to coordinators Kim Vierra or Shirley McAdoo to get involved. Financial donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1152, Estacada. Last year, the program helped 45 local families. The youth group at Estacada First Baptist Church is collecting hats and gloves for local middle and high school students. Donations will be accepted at the church at 29101 S.E. Eagle Creek Road through Wednesday, Dec. 12. The Estacada Public Library will collect toys for the Christmas for Kids program through Saturday, Dec. 22. Toys can also be dropped off at Estacada Les Schwab, 140 S.W. Frontage Road. Christmas for Kids provides holiday gifts to families with children. Applications are available at the Estacada library, 825 N.W. Wade St. Eagle Creek Saloon and Planet Cup of Joe will collect donations for Kaiyah's Christmas Dinner, which will connect families in need with a meal on Christmas Eve. The meal, cooked by Eagle Creek Saloon staff, will include turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, a roll and a brownie. Donations can be made at Eagle Creek Saloon, 25960 S.E. Eagle Creek Road, or Planet Cup of Joe, 581 N.E. Main St. or 375 S.W. Zobrist St. Those who wish to receive food can call 503-630-2029 or text 971-645-7867 with a delivery address, number of meals needed and a telephone number for verification. Sign ups will be available through Wednesday, Dec. 19. Additionally, veterans can pick up a meal to-go from 2-5 p.m. Dec. 24 or call in advance to have one delivered. The Estacada Area Food Bank accepts canned and packaged goods year-round. During the holiday season food bank leaders noted that small sized meats, such as 10-12 ounce hams and turkeys, are valuable. At any time of year, high protein foods and toiletries are also helpful items for the food bank. The nonprofit organization at 272 S. Broadway St. is open for donations from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. For more information, call 503-630-2888. The Estacada Community Center is seeking additional volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program. To schedule a ride along or learn more, call 503-630-7454.
