Crews pull 2 bodies from SUV sunk in river near Estacada
The bodies of two missing men were recovered from a waterlogged SUV by rescue crews searching the Collawash River near Estacada, police say.
Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies and search-and-rescue crews fanned out from the Ripplebrook Ranger Station on Thursday, Jan. 3 following reports that two men had not returned from their trip into "East County."
The next day, authorities found a "fully submerged" red Chevrolet Tahoe in the Collawash River around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.
A dive team responded on Jan. 5 and removed the vehicle from the river. Inside, rescuers found the bodies of the missing men: Kevin Shaver and Chase Villarreal.
"Investigators believe speed was a factor in the event that led the vehicle to leave the roadway and into the Collawash River," according to a news release.
Police were able to save a pet dog on Jan. 4 that had apparently escaped from the car and was found on the far side of the river.
Police say the families of both men have been notified of their deaths. You can watch video of the recovery efforts here.
