Former assistant fire chief has held seat since 2005, has worked in fire industry since 1962

John McAdoo is running unopposed for Position 5 on the Estacada Rural Fire District Board of Directors.

McAdoo has held the seat since 2005 and was previously the assistant fire chief in Estacada. He has worked in the fire industry since 1962.

The Estacada News spoke to the incumbent about the issues facing the fire district, the feasibility study with Clackamas Fire and several other topics. Answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

Estacada News: Why are you running for fire board?

John McAdoo: I want to continue supporting the fire district and serving the community. I have over 30 years of experience in the fire service. I enjoy the career and serving the community in that capacity.

EN: What are some of the most pressing issues for the district?

McAdoo: I believe the most pressing issue is revenue to ensure we can survive as the Estacada Rural Fire District and provide the quality of service that people expect.

EN: What are your thoughts on the feasibility study with Clackamas Fire? Would you support integration if the study called for it? Why or why not?

McAdoo: I have mixed feelings. I'm estimating that over the last few years, 50 residents have come to me and are gravely concerned. They don't want to see their fire department go away because they feel they'll lose the community feeling that they have. But no matter where firefighters come from, they'll do their best. No matter which direction we go, we'll have quality service.

I really enjoy the close community relationships. If we merge, I believe that will go away. I have a hard time letting that go. I voted no for the original (intergovernmental agreement) contract (with Clackamas Fire), and I voted no on the feasibility study. But if we have no volunteers, that might be the only way we can go to provide the support that the community expects.

EN: What are the district's strengths, and where is an area the district could improve?

McAdoo: A strength is the commitment our personnel have to provide the best service with the resources they have. All of the employees, volunteers and board members are doing an excellent job, and are really stepping up.

A weaknesses is we can't get people to volunteer like we did 5, 10, 15 years ago. People have such busy lives, plus the training is so immersive. The time commitment and training requirements have had an effect on our volunteer organization.

EN: How can the board support the fire district in providing the most effective service to the community?

McAdoo: Being very vigilant and managing revenue and resources. We need to make sure that the money is spent appropriately in different areas of the budget.

EN: What is something else you want voters to know about you?

McAdoo: I started my career in the fire service as a volunteer in 1962, and I worked my way up the ranks. I've worked for four fire districts and one city department. I have a passion for the fire ser-

vice, and I really enjoy serving the community in that capacity.
