Event helps students prepare to blast into new school year
As local students prepare to exchange days of summer vacation for learning in the classroom, Clackamas Valley Baptist Church wants to ensure that they are prepared for the upcoming school year.
Members of the church will host their annual Back to School Blast, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at 29275 S.E. Eagle Creek Road.
Each student who attends the free gathering will receive a backpack filled with school supplies, as well as opportunities to participate in fun activities.
"Our intent is to reach families truly in need, that really need help filling those school supply lists," said Pam Ellis, one of the event's organizers. "We want kids to go away feeling like they have something they know is theirs."
Along with receiving school supplies, children can play carnival games such as lollipop toss and washer toss. There will also be a bounce house and temporary tattoos, along with food like hot
dogs, snow cones and cotton candy.
During previous years' events, Ellis has enjoyed seeing children happily walk around with their snow cones.
She encouraged anyone interested to attend the upcoming Back to School Blast, noting that it offers a friendly atmosphere.
"We want to welcome any families, especially if they need a little extra help," she said. "It's a judgment free zone."
