Gathering held twice a month at the Estacada library and allows participants to practice speaking Spanish

Those who wish to learn or practice their Spanish speaking abilities should add an upcoming series of events at the Estacada Public Library to their calendars.

Spanish for Beginners, previously known as the Spanish Conversation Group, will meet from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, in the small meeting room in the library at 825 N.W. Wade St. In the future, the group will meet on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Registration is not required.

"I wanted it to be more inclusive, and include people who want to learn Spanish," said library specialist Alice Perez Ververa, the group's coordinator, discussing the name change.

The meetings typically begin with participants introducing themselves, followed by an activity in Spanish to encourage conversation. To close, participants share something new they learned.

"It's not an instructional course. It's a time to practice Spanish with other learners," Perez Ververa said. "(The goal is to) provide an avenue for local residents to practice a second language."

She added that the group typically receives four participants.

"Sometimes attendees will speak Spanish with me at the (library) desk," she said. "All levels are welcome. It's a great place to build community and meet other learners."
