Debris, ongoing danger will keep road closed at least until Wednesday, ODOT says

COURTESY PHOTO: ODOT - Mud, rocks and debris from the hillside between Angel's Rest Trailhead and Multnomah Falls prompted ODOT to close the stretch of highway until further notice. ODOT will keep a two-mile section of the Historic Columbia River Highway closed between Multnomah Falls and the Angel's Rest trailhead until at least Wednesday afternoon after debris from a landslide blocked part of the two-lane road early Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, an ODOT spokesperson said.

While ODOT crews evaluate whether the slide indicates a more serious threat, the road will remain closed as a safety precauation after geologists and hydrologists inspected the area Tuesday. Heavy rain forecast for the Columbia River Gorge could create further instability in an area prone to slides.

Crews will consider whether to reopen the road on Wednesday.
