Customer told the store's volunteer, 'I'd like to see you try to make me wear a mask' before purchasing a book

COURTESY PHOTO - Several weeks ago, a customer at The Book Nook refused to wear a face mask while in the store.

A recent customer at The Book Nook refused to wear a face mask, in spite of the store's policy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The incident occurred several weeks ago, and Book Nook Manager Linda Arnett shared the details in a post on the store's Facebook page Tuesday, June 23.

"A man recently came into The Book Nook and said to our volunteer, 'I'd like to see you try to make me wear a mask,'" Arnett wrote, discussing the incident at the store at 155 S.W. Third Ave. "He then turned & walked towards a book shelf where he chose a book. He returned to the counter and paid for his book and left."

Arnett told the Estacada News she felt angry and disappointed upon learning what happened.

Law enforcement had not been called about the occurance, and Arnett said she's deliberating if she wants to do so.

The Book Nook, which is staffed by volunteers, reopened six weeks ago after being closed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Those involved at the store have asked customers to wear face masks since their reopening. After recommending that community members wear face masks in public because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Kate Brown announced last week that face masks would be mandatory in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Hood River, Marion, Polk and Lincoln counties beginning Wednesday, June 24.

"We will not allow our volunteers to be threatened. We value the health of our entire community," Arnett wrote. "If this should ever happen again we will close the store."
