An upcoming gathering will highlight Estacada's recently established food cart pod.

The Lumber Yard Food Cart Pod, consisting of Kellan's Dogs, Bobablastic, Sabor Yucateco Mayan Cuisine, and M and D Down Home BBQ, will host a grand opening event from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Zobrist Street. Additional sponsors of the festivities include Just-In Video and Solutions & Mentoring Outdoor Adventures.

Most of the food carts in the pod opened earlier this year, but the owners of the carts said they wanted to host a grand opening in celebration of their new dining area.

Activities will include a llama petting zoo, a mechanical bull, chalk art, bounce house, trampoline, raffles and live music. Face masks are required for all who attend.

Some of the activities came from community connections. For example, a customer at Kellan's Dogs mentioned they had llamas.

"I asked if they could come to the opening," said Kellan's Dogs co-owner Juan Luna.

"And then my mom (who operates Sabor Yucateco) said, 'Let's get a mechanical bull," said Gilmer Gongora, who runs Bobablastic with his brother Ivan.

They believe the event will be valuable for the Estacada community since many of its usual gatherings have not taken place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We wanted to do an event that the town's been missing," Gongora said.

"We're excited for the community to come and be a part of this and have fun," Juan added.

This isn't the first time the food carts have collaborated. They appreciate that their establishments are together in a pod so they can support each other.

"A lot of times, people come to get something from one cart and then visit the others," Gongora said.

The pod is interested in supporting the community and sponsors Estacada Youth Soccer teams.

"We want to support the community that supports us," Gongora said.

"We're very grateful," Luna noted. "This is a way we can give back."

Eventually, they hope to add a fire pit to the dining area.

"We want to make this place welcoming to every single person in this town," Luna said. "We want to make it an experience and more than just sitting in a parking lot."
