Voters will choose between incumbent, newcomer to lead city in the November election

Two candidates are running for the position of mayor in Estacada.

Sean Drinkwine and Sarahi Welton have both filed for candidacy in the Tuesday, Nov. 8, election.

Drinkwine was first elected mayor in 2016 and served as an Estacada City Councilor starting in 2009. He declined to answer a questionnaire from the Estacada News.

Welton moved to Estacada with her family four years ago and said that she is running for mayor because "I believe in Estacada."

"It would be an honor and a privilege to serve my community in this way. I plan to do so by listening openly to the concerns of all community members with the mutual goal of building a better Estacada," she said. "One that thrives economically and maintains that 'small town' feel in our neighborhoods is important to me."

Welton's priorities would include public safety and support for local businesses.

"I believe I live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I'm looking forward to being the voice that will strive to maintain this beauty and fight for safer neighborhoods. Our surrounding areas and town population have grown with undeniable momentum. I have the energy and the determination to keep us moving in the right direction. I know we can continue to be a thriving community that is economically strong, safe, resilient and equitable for all," she said.

She added that she supports first responders and appreciates the difficulty they face.

"I don't want to see people afraid of letting their kids play outside or afraid of walking down the streets. I want to see our entire city secure and fearless like it once was. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to fight for and implement improvements to public safety through properly funded police and fire departments," she said.

Welton described local businesses as the backbone of the community.

"Finding new and innovative ways to support our local businesses is vital to our community's success. If our small business goes under, our whole community suffers," she said. "Being a small business owner myself, I know the ways they have suffered significantly over the past few years."

Welton is the owner of Pure Elegance Artistry, a Sandy-based salon specializing in hair and makeup for weddings and special occasions.

Welton also noted that the position of mayor requires someone who is "reliable, cooperative and passionate.

"I'm not running for mayor to climb the political ladder. I am running solely to be the voice for the Estacada community. Being the mayor is a great responsibility of establishing the most suitable policies and regulations for our community," she said.
