2018: Student-written play performedon stage at Estacada High School
During a recent meeting of the Elwood Ladies Club, attendees created dish pads and participated in a potluck. Additionally, "a short business meeting was held. Mrs. Beverly Shuster of Oregon City was the demonstrator at a class of Tube Artex paint following the business meeting."
At the Estacada Food King, brown sugar was 28 cents a box, bags of popsicles were 5 cents each and 5 pounds of oranges were 99 cents.
Classified advertisements from 40 years ago included many items for sale, including an antique leather couch, a white enamel garbage burner and an upright piano.
Leesa E. Crandell had recently graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Crandell of Estacada. "During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and receives special training in human relations," The News reported.
Items from the newspaper's community calendar included meetings of the Estacada Citizens for Fairness, the Handspinners Group and a Taize Prayer Service.
Estacada High School senior Kristy Eaton was The News' student of the week. She planned to attend Clackamas Community College before transfering to another school to study psychology or massage therapy. Her favorite class at Estacada High School was American studies.
An event had recently raised $1,607 for the Estacada Community Center's Meals on Wheels program. Local restaurants donated food for the Taste of Estacada gathering at the center. Event organizers noted that the event grows every year. "I hope everyone had a really good time," said Kelly Williams of the Community Center, discussing the 2009 gathering.
Estacada High School students were preparing to present "Between the Lines," a play written by senior Ciara Schwimmer. The story follows Evelyn (Kamryn Tenbush), a student at the dilapidated Easton High School. She and her best friend Sydney (Alicia James) are outcasts, while Paige (Brenna Pierce), Liam (Eric Sohnrey) and Andrew (Dylan Darity) are the most popular students in school. When Evelyn dreams up Weston High School, a place that is everything Easton High School isn't, she must come to terms with her social status being switched. "I knew I wanted to write something at a high school with modern issues," Schwimmer said.
