Denyse McGriff: Clackamas County elected official needs to be held accountable for racist, xenophobic statements.

At Oregon City's Jan. 20 City Commission meeting, I made a statement about Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull's racist, xenophobic, transphobic and Islamophobic comments. My fellow Oregon City commissioners expressed their unanimous support as well. There has also been a show of unity by many of Oregon's regional elected leaders and constituents. All four county commissioners, department heads at Clackamas County and countless others are calling for him to step down as well.

Denyse McGriffOregon City has been in "hunker down mode" over the last year and a half leading up to the recent mayoral recall election. Our community needs to recover, and is beginning a dialogue to begin reconciliation and healing.

We are slowly standing back up and speaking up about the comments and the injustice of it. We must be willing to hold elected leaders accountable. Leadership is not given, it is earned. It is about teamwork, collaboration and truly working on behalf of the community.

There is still a lot of work to be done in the year ahead. Oregon City is up to the challenge. Let's join together to work toward equality-based solutions for the benefit of Oregon City. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated, "The time is always right to do the right thing." Let us move forward to do the right thing.

Denyse C. McGriff is an Oregon City commissioner.
